Teaching Keyboarding Grade 3

  • Use Teacher Notesto
    • Set Up your New Class for the Year before the students arrive
    • Add new Students to this year's class.
    • Change Mission Options to get rid of Dictation and make other games required.
    • Print an inititial Progress Report as a benchmark to where your class started
  • Lesson 1
    • Review Logon Procedures for Computers
      • Get New Accounts for New Students
      • If New Accounts are not created yet, use second grade class username and password
      • Practice Log On Procedures and Computer Lab Procedures
        • (Sanitize) (Red/Blue Cups) (Chairs)
      • Review the Keyboard
        Placement Near Edge.
        Caps Laps, Num Locks, Space Bar, Backspace, Enter
      • Review position of fingers and hands for
        • Bump Keys
        • Home Row Keys
        • Use Cat's Claws Analogy
        • Practice with eyes clothes

      • Have Students Log on Slideshow of Techniques (Start with Slide 5) & Movie
      • Have Students adjust workstations (keyboard to edge of desk)
      • Have Students demonstrate good technique and practice reaches
        (homerows, spacebar, Shift, Enter)
    • Open Type to Learn Folder (Turn down sound)
    • Have students Play and Practice (not logon to system yet) and Experiment with Lesson 4 & 5 on Play and Practice
    • Focus on Technique (walk around and help students focus on Technique)
  • Session 2 (Lesson 1 on Type to Learn)
    • Practice Opening Type to Learn and Turning Off SOUND
    • Have Students find teacher name, Class, and add first last name.
    • Practice going to Lesson 1. Review Techniques!!! Lots and Lots of walk around and verbal reinforcement.
    • Practice Exiting Type to Learn and Logging Back in Again
      (This is important because if you don't review this, the students create duplicate accounts)
    • Demo how to navigate through Lessons (FIRST) then GAMES and Activities.

    • By This Lesson teacher should have all students moved into correct class on Type to Learn
    • (if not, then work with Technique and Play and Practice)

  • Session 3 Practice Home Rows and REACHES.
    • Lesson 1 and 2 on Type to Learn.
    • Important to do LOTS of focus on Technique and HELP students with position of fingers and Reaches.
    • Demo before class.
    • show how to go from one Mission to Next. Stress importance of not moving forward if you are still looking at fingers on this lesson.

  • Session 4 - Add KeyGuides (Missions 2 - 3)
    • Really focus on techniques as students proceed through Early Sessions. Lots of encouragements and adjustments.
    • When Students get to Mission 3, you can "dub" them as Master Typers half way through the lesson if they are not looking at their keys. Make it an Honor to Receive your KeyGuide. (not penalty). Tell them they can't leave Mission 3 until they have earned their keyguide.

  • Session 5 - 6
    • Do Not Rush To Mission 4. Make sure students do reaches correctly and return to home position after each reach and are not looking.
    • If a student is ready for Mission 4 they may proceed. NO Guide Guides Allowed for this lesson.
    • Demonstrate SHIFTING and PRACTICE.. before they get to this lesson. Students are challenged with opposite hands and synchronizing the reache and shift. Practice LOTS in blank notepad if necessary.
    • Watch Kids technique for SHIFTING. Help them with this.

  • Session 7 +
    • Mission 5 by default has 'dictation'. We don't use this. Students have trouble with spelling what they hear.
      Make sure to turn this off for your whole class prior to this session. See Teacher Notes.
    • Mission 6 and 7 are hurdles. Longer reaches. Challenging. Lots of encouragements and teacher walk around necessary.
      Home practice is encouraged about this time. Here are some strategies for involving students with home practice.
